Money for Money's Sake

By Dean

that which is most optimized in our Western culture is the advancement of the accumulation of money. Without this activity the entire culture would take on a different aspect. If life and the optimization of the values of Life were the object of our "game", then we would see an Earth in harmony with itself and with it's inhabitants.

Sadly, the continuance of this mad pursuit only brings on more crime, poverty, and insecurity. That which has social value is denigrated by politicians in favor of that which has the maximum profit potential to their benefactors.

Those activities which are important to maintain our Life on this Planet in harmony with Nature are not allocated sufficient funds, since they generate no profit and are of little economic value. Animals have no money, so they starve, are hunted down to extinction or are exploited only for their financial potential. Trees have only value when they are cut down to be burned or used in our housing, when other alternatives are available, but not as monetarily optimal. The very lungs of our Earth go dirty since changing over to ecologically sound fuels would involve too much money.

Our oceans are dumping grounds for sludge and waste of all kinds. The fish population is disappearing and we can not find our way out, since no one can claim possession of the oceans and therefore no one will breed fish for others.

Money is the root of our problems, not because it is intrinsically evil as some claim, but rather because in our present Western culture, money is optimized for it's own sake. Money calls more money, takes from those who have little and gives to those who have much. This ethereal substance has become the life blood of society, touching most people on Earth, and yet we have not found a way to make it obey our common good. Our very Life depends on it. We are living in a chaos of greed and materialism, with a culture permeated by commercialism and the glorification of wealth. How far this is from True Life!
